Radiometer DSC-2
The innovative DCS-2 automatic dose counter and controller represents the state-of-the-art methodology required in today’s busy testing laboratories. It measures the spectral response according to the erythema action spectrum and the UVA spectrum to enable precise dose control when measuring SPF values in vivo, UVA in vivo or during in vitro pre-irradiation on PMMA plates in association with the detectors:
- PMA2110 UVA (320-400 nm)
- PMA2101 UVB-ery (290-400 nm)
The unit is extremely easy to use, considerably reducing the number of keystrokes required to set up and run typical test procedures. The 7″ (17.8 cm) touch screen features intuitive menus and makes it easy to set control parameters.
The pre-programmed data of PMA series intelligent sensors eliminates the need to enter offsets, calibration data and units, saving even more valuable time (see operating tips below).

Directions for use
The DSC-2 radiometer is compatible with many different detectors. In the case of solar tests, here are the main detectors:
- PMA2110 Digital UVA
This sensor is commonly used for UVA studies (320 – 400 nm) such asISO 24443, ISO/DIS 23698, ISO 24442 and the Boots Star Rating system, as well as sunlight. When used with a radiometer, measured irradiance is displayed in user-selectable mW/cm2 or W/m2. The integrated dose is indicated in Joules/cm2 or kJoules/m2.
The sensor has a resolution of 0.001 mW/cm2 and a full scale of 200 mW/cm2, enabling very weak and very strong signals to be measured with the same sensor. The effect of stray light is negligible.
Its Teflon diffuser ensures an angular response close to a cosine function (Lambertian response), making it suitable for measuring scattered radiation or radiation from extended sources (5% for an angle ≤ 40°).
- PMA2101 Digital UVB-ery
Solar Light’s PMA2101 biologically-weighted UVB (290 – 400 nm) erythema detector provides an accurate measurement of SUV radiation (also known as “sunburning UV”) from sunlight or artificial light sources. Compliant with ISO/DIS 23675, FDA 2011 and ISO 24444 standards, its spectral response closely follows the erythema action spectrum (also known as the CIE 1987 action spectrum), which represents the sensitivity of human skin to sunburn.
The sensor has a resolution of 0.001 MED/hr (or 0.01 µW/cm2) and a full scale of 200 MED/hr (or 1.160 µW/cm2), enabling very weak and very strong signals to be measured with the same sensor. The effect of stray light is negligible.
This sensor has an angular response very close to an ideal cosine function (Lambertian response), making it suitable for measurements of diffuse radiation or radiation generated by extended sources. Its design is based on phosphor technology and has proved extremely stable over long periods. The angular response of the PMA2101 sensor is cosine-corrected and suitable for measurements of diffuse radiation or radiation from extended sources (5% for an angle ≤ 60°).
- PMA2107 Digital UVA+UVB
Solar Light’s model PMA2107 UVA+B (290 – 400 nm) detector provides accurate measurement of unweighted UVA+B ultraviolet radiation from sunlight or artificial light sources.
The high dynamic range enables measurement of very weak signals down to 0.001 mW/cm2, as well as very high illuminances in excess of 200 mW/cm2. The angular response of the PMA2107 sensor is cosine-corrected and suitable for measurements of diffuse radiation or radiation from extended sources (5% for an angle ≤ 40°).
NB: Annual calibration is necessary to ensure the quality and accuracy of the radiometer and associated detectors.
