Resistance to Sand

Beyond the static sun protection performance provided by sun protection products against UV radiation, photoprotection is put to the test by consumers in real-life conditions of use such as resistance to water, sweat, etc.

However, no standardized or harmonized in vivo or in vitro method is available today for assessing the resistance of photoprotection directly linked to sand. Indeed, the presence of sand can damage the film of sun protection product, but it can also lead consumers to rub themselves to remove residual sand.

In order to determine and substantiate this product efficacy claim, WENEOS has developed an exclusive in vitro method which requires the measurement of a sun protection factor (SPF) before and/or after sand exposure, which is crucial to ensure consumer protection.

In vitro sand resistance

This new in vitro method makes it possible to assess the percentage Sand Resistance of a sunscreen product by comparing the SPF (Sun Protection Factor) ratio in vitro before and after a period of agitation in a specific standardized sand. To do this, the product is spread on a textured surface, the surface quantity being identical to that used to determine SPF. The samples are placed in contact with the sand and stirred with an automatic shaker. Test conditions such as time, speed and agitation movements in the sand have been pre-selected to ensure reliable results and moderate sand friction.

Comparison of in vitro signal absorbance measurements with resistance (batch, aging, etc.)

The statistical comparison method makes it possible to compare two sun protection products in terms of ageing, batch, benchmark, etc. When checking the absorbance spectrum between a reference and a test product using an in vitro method, two important rules must be observed. First of all, compare the two products at the same time and under the same conditions, to limit measurement variability. Secondly, a three-step verification based on absorbance values, including comparison of curve shape, variability and intensity.

In this method, a specific step for comparing the resistance of the two products can be added, such as water resistance, friction resistance, etc.
