Protection UVC

In the sun protection cosmetics sector, special attention is paid to sunlight, a continuous electromagnetic wave. The importance of protecting oneself from UV radiation, particularly harmful in the UVB (290-320 nm) and UVA (320-400 nm) bands, is universally recognized, through the use of sunscreen products and other means of protection such as clothing.

A portion of the UV spectrum, the UVC (100-290 nm), does not reach the Earth, as it is absorbed by the upper atmosphere. However, the thinning of the ozone layer due to anthropogenic chemicals is reducing this protective filtration, with ozone recovery not expected before 2050. In addition, artificial sources of UV radiation, used in industry for a variety of applications, generate UV of different wavelengths, including the more dangerous UVC.

This study therefore focuses on protection against UV-C from 200 to 290 nm, which is particularly relevant for certain specific activities.

In Vitro UVC protection

To ensure complete UV protection (including UVB from 290 to 320 nm and UVA from 320 to 400 nm) for certain specific activities, an in vitro method is proposed to also assess UVC protection (from 290 to 200 nm).
